Red Velvet
Olivier Award-winning Adrian Lester will star in Lolita Chakrabarti’s critically acclaimed play Red Velvet, which will be the third production to feature in the Kenneth Branagh season at the Garrick Theatre. Originally premiering at the Tricycle Theatre before transferring to St Ann’s Warehouse in New York, Red Velvet is a multi-award-winning play that tells the story of African American actor Ira Aldridge. Set in 1833, the greatest actor of the generation, Edmund Kean, collapses onstage whilst playing Othello at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden. Aldridge is asked to take over the role, but as the public riot in the streets about the abolition of slavery, it is unpredictable how the cast and audience will react. Red Velvet is based on the true story of Ira Aldridge and is directed by Indhu Rubasingham, featuring as part of a number of remarkable productions at the Garrick. Lester himself is a well-known British actor and has been nominated twice for Best Actor for his performance in Red Velvet.
