The Scottsboro Boys
The six times Olivier nominated Kander and Ebb musical ‘The Scottsboro Boys’ enjoyed a sell out run at the Young Vic and is now transferring to the Garrick Theatre for a limited run in October. ‘The Scottsboro Boys’ tells the true story of nine African American teenagers who were wrongly accused of the rape of two white women on a US passenger train in 1931. The boys were trialled; some were sentenced to death and others to a life long prison term. The trial sparked a huge public outcry from the African American community about the lack of a fair trial. The two women admitted to falsely accusing the boys of rape and a doctor proved that they hadn’t been assaulted, but despite this the Alabama Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court continued the trial. Some of the boys were imprisoned and some were still sentenced to death. ‘The Scottsboro Boys’ musical depicts the plight of the boys and the resulting changes to the American justice system. The show is directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman and the book is by David Thompson.
