The Winter's Tale
Kenneth Branagh’s new season of work at the Garrick theatre will kick off with a production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale starring Judi Dench and the man himself. Regarded as one of Shakespeare’s problem plays thanks to the way it fuses elements of comedy and tragedy this tale of reconciliation has proved a popular choice with both directors and audiences. In a fit of insane jealousy Leontes the King of Sicilia accuses his beloved pregnant wife and best friend King Polixenes of Bohemia of adultery. Assuming the daughter the Queen gives birth to is illegitimate Leontes orders that the child be banished. This error in judgement leads to tragedy and 16 years of repentance on the part of Leontes until the show reaches its fairy tale like conclusion. Full of surprises this most quirky of Shakespeare's plays includes oracles, a miracle and even a bear.
